Bashundhara Group, a leading business conglomerate of the country, has stood by the helpless people of Lalmonirhat worst affected by the overflowing Teesta and Dharla Rivers and unemployment amid the coronavirus pandemic.

On behalf of Bashundhara Group, the Kaler Kantho, one of the highest-circulated Bengali national dailies, distributed relief items among impoverished people through its social organisation Shuvasangha which works for the underprivileged.  Advocate Matiar Rahman, chairman  of Lalmonirhat district council and general secretary of district Awami League, inaugurated the relief distribution at Paschim Barua Rotary High School under Kulaghat Union of Lalmonirhat Sadar on Wednesday.

Ferdousi Begum Beauty, poet and social activist and adviser of Kaler Kantho's Shuvasangha in Lalmonirhat, journalist Mofakhkharul Islam Majnu, Ashikur Rahman Defense and Khorshed Alam Sagar, among others, were present on the occasion.

Earlier in the morning, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) of Lalmonirhat Rashedul Haque Pradhan inaugurated the distribution at Babupara Eidgah ground in Lalmonirhat Municipality.

Speaking on the occasion, he said those who lend a helping hand to disadvantaged people in difficult times are real friends. Bashundhara Group has proved once again that they are true friends of the country by providing the unemployed with relief items during the Covid-19 disaster, he added.

He also called for continuing this trend in the coming days. Rashedul Haque Pradhan was accompanied by Lalmonirhat Municipal Mayor Rezaul Karim Swapan, Sadar Upazila Parishad Vice Chairman Jabed Hossain Bakkar and BCL municipal unit’s President Sharif Ahmed Mohan, among others. Haider Ali Babu, Lalmonirhat correspondent of Kaler Kantho, delivered the welcome speech.

It is learned that Bashundhara Group will hand out relief among 3,000 families in five upazilas and two municipalities of Lalmonirhat in phases. Each packet of relief contains rice, pulses, flour and oil.

Hajera Bewa, a recipient of the relief and resident of Paschim Barua village of Lalmonirhat, said, "I have been going through hard days since the outbreak of coronavirus last year. No one has ever helped me during this time and I have to pass my days in hunger. I am no longer worried as Bashundhara Group has given me a huge amount of relief goods. May Allah bless the person, who has presented me with these goods, with a long life."

Tears of joy rolled down her cheeks while receiving gifts from Bashundhara Group at Paschim Barua Rotary High School field in Lalmonirhat sadar upazila.

Like Hajera Bewa, many poverty-stricken people including widows, physically and mentally challenged persons, day-labourers and hawkers received the relief and expressed their happiness.
