2 held with gold bars

Police in a drive arrested two people with five gold bars from Sadar upazila in Chaudanga on Friday.

The arrestees attempted to smuggle the gold bars into India, police said.  The arrestees are Kamrul Hasan Jewel, 35, and Arif, 48, residents of Kutubpur village in Damurhuda upazila of the district.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of Chaudanga Sadar Police Station raided a car in BADC intersection area around 1:00am and caught Jewel and Arif red handed along with gold bars, said the police station Officer-in-Charge Mahbub Rahman. He said police seized the car along with five gold bars.

During initial interrogation, the duo admitted that they were heading to India for smuggling the gold bars.

Taking legal steps in this regard was under process, added the OC. Just a day ago, members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) conducting a drive also arrested a man with 58 gold bars weighting 9kg and 860 grams from Damurhuda frontier area in the district.
