‘Withdraw case against journo Jewel’

Popular News

Journalist leaders on Thursday issued a seven-day ultimatum to Victor Trading Corporation to withdraw the case filed against crime reporter of DBC Saiful Islam Jewel.

They also warned of a tougher movement if their demand is not met within the time frame.

The ultimatum was given at a protest rally staged by Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) on the premises of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) at Segunbagicha in the capital.

Kawser Bhuiyan of Victor Trading Corporation beat up Jewel, as he attempted to collect information about irregularities and corruption over the purchase of medical parts during a visit to the Corporation on August 2.

Speaking on the occasion, CRAB President Mirza Mehedi Tamal said, “Kawser may think that crime reporters will negotiate with him, but it’s never possible.”

He urged law enforcers not to harass Jewel in connection with the case. He also requested police to press charges against Kawser and his cohorts in a case filed by Jewel soon after the attack on him.

President of Dhaka Union of Journalists (faction) Sohel Haider Chowdhury, former President of DUJ Abu Jafar Surza, President of DRU Nazrul Islam Mithu, General Secretary Nurul Islam Hasib, former President of CRAB Esaraf Hossain Esa, and its incumbent General Secretary Asaduzzaman Biku spoke, among others.
