Rohingya woman, son arrested with gold bars, ornaments in Ctg

CHATTOGRAM: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested a Rohingya woman and her son with illegal gold bars and ornaments worth around Tk 1.50 crore from Sitakunda upazila in the district on Saturday.

The arrestees were identified as Sahura Khatun, 68, and her son Asmat Ullah, 24, of Salimpur area under the upazila.

Rab-7 Senior Assistant Director (AD) Nurul Absar said on receiving information, a team of the Rab raided the Salimpur area around 10.00am on Saturday.

They arrested the duo from their residence and recovered eight gold bars and gold ornaments including five necklaces, two bangles, three pairs of earrings, three rings and four lockets from them, he said.

The arrestees entered Bangladesh from Myanmar in 2012. They had been carrying out the gold smuggling with the money they earned through Yaba trading, he said.

They used to send the gold to different camps at Ukhiya and Teknaf upazilas in Cox’s Bazar district, added the Rab officer.
