Nurse conducts cesarean; baby hit by surgical knife

A newborn baby sustained serious injuries as a nurse conducted a cesarean section of the infant’s mother at a private clinic in Faridpur district town on Saturday.

The baby sustained injuries as the surgical knife used in the operation hit its forehead and body.  After birth, the baby had nine stitches on its forehead. Condition of the baby is critical.

Later, mother Rupa Akhter, 20, and her baby were admitted to Faridpur Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College for better treatment.

The incident took place at Al Madina Private Hospital and Diagnostic Centre in Faridpur town. Nurse Chaina Akter conducted the Cesarean section.

Hailing from Goalanda in Rajbari, the mother got admitted to the clinic for cesarean section on the day, said one of her family members.

“We thought a doctor would carry out the operation, but the nurse did instead and caused serious injuries to the baby,” the family member said.

They demanded exemplary punishment to the nurse and the authorities of the hospital.

When contacted, Dr Mohammad Siddikur Rahman, Faridpur Civil Surgeon, told the Daily Sun that he, additional district magistrate, addition superintendent of police and upazila nirbahi officer rushed to the hospital and stopped its activities.

“We have investigated the matter and submitted a report to deputy commissioner of the district for further action against the private hospital, its authorities and the accused,” he said.

MA Jalil, officer-in-charge of Faridpur Kotwali Police Station, said they had arrested the nurse and the owner of the hospital Polash Molla.
