CHATTOGRAM: Sixteen people arrested in a case filed over an attack on JM Sen Hall Puja Mandap in the port city were placed on one-day remand on Monday. Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Hossain Md Reza issued the remand order following an appeal of the investigation officer in the case. The accused are Md Iftekhar Uddin, Towhidul Islam alias Polash, Khalid Bin Walid, Syed Mohammad Moin Uddin alias Moin, Md Delwar Hossain, Masud Parvez, Md Humayun, Md Jayedul Islam, Md Rassel, Md Nurul Islam, Md Sohag, Md Jabed Hossain, Md Ayub Ali, Md Amir Hossain, Md Khorshed Alam and Md Omar Faruk.
Investigation Officer Bablu Kumar Paul, also sub-inspector of Kotwali police station, said they appealed for seven days’ remand for the accused in the case on October 19.
A group of people staged a demonstration and brought out a procession in Chattogram cirty, protesting against the alleged undermining of the Holy Quran in Cumilla. Some of them moved towards JM Sen Hall, a renowned puja mandop of the city, and attempted to enter it. They also tore some banners from outside at this time. Police fired teargas canisters and blank shots to disperse the people. Some were also injured during the incident.
Later, police filed a case under the Special Power Act accusing 83 identified and 500 unidentified accused.
