BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed deep concern and condemned the brutal attack on the election campaign of BNP candidate Ershad Ullah in Chattogram.
In a statement on Wednesday night, he said that after the fall of the Awami League dictatorial regime in the student-people movement, the miscreants have once again engaged in creating an unstable situation and exploiting the resulting anarchy.
“This attack is a brutal manifestation of the miscreants’ attempts,” he said.
“Such incidents have been carried out to put the current interim government in a difficult situation and disrupt the upcoming national election.”
Fakhrul said that there is no alternative but to crack down on the perpetrators with an iron hand. “People of all classes and professions, regardless of party affiliation or opinion, must remain united to protect the lives and property of the countrymen.”
The BNP secretary general demanded an immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those who attacked Ershad Ullah and others, and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.
BNP nominated candidate for the Chattogram-8 constituency, Ershad Ullah, and his supporters were conducting a campaign in the Bayezid Bostami area this evening, when assailants opened fire on them.
Three people – Ershad, Sarwar Hossain alias Babla, and Shanto – sustained bullet wounds in the attack. Later, Sarwar, accused in 15 cases, died of his injuries at the Evercare Hospital.
