The Hindu community celebrated Mahalaya, the auspicious occasion heralding the advent of goddess Durga, on Wednesday in the capital and elsewhere in the country.

The Mahanagar Sarbajanin Puja Committee arranged special programmes at Dhakeshwari Temple in the capital on the occasion which includes installation of Mahalaya Ghat and special puja (prayer) at the central mandap (puja pandel) on Wednesday morning.

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Vikram Kumar Doraiswami joined the mahalaya ceremony there and greeted the devotees. He, along with his wife Sangeeta Doraiswami, took part in the candle lighting ceremony.

A special programme was arranged at Banani Puja Mandap at 5.30am marking the day where devotees gathered and prayed for the greater wellbeing of the country.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud attended the programme and greeted the devotees on the occasion.

While addressing the function as the chief guest he described about different initiatives taken by the current government for ensuring religious practice of all communities.

Various programmes were also arranged at different temples in the capital and elsewhere in the country marking the day.
