1 lakh Korail slum dwellers to be inoculated: Atiq

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam on Tuesday said they will vaccinate 1 lakh more dwellers of Korail slum in phases.

“Apart from today’s (Tuesday) vaccination among 1,000 slum dwellers in three slums, we will administer vaccine to 1 lakh dwellers of Korail slum in phases,” he said while addressing the inaugural ceremony of Covid-19 vaccination at Korail slum marking the 75th birthday of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Atiqul said, “Generally, we celebrate a birthday by cutting a cake and releasing balloons, but this time we have decided to celebrate the day by immunizing slum dwellers.”

Lauding the Prime Minister, he said, “On 15 August, most of her family members including her father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and little brother Sheikh Russel were assassinated. She and her sister Sheikh Rehana escaped death as they were aboard.

“She could have naturally hated people and led a luxurious life abroad. But she sacrificed her life for the people of the country.”

He said that both the government and the DNCC are sincere in their attempt to protect the interest of the slum dwellers.

“We are installing fire hydrants in different slums under DNCC so that dwellers can douse the fire with water. We have already kept aside Tk 100 million for this purpose,” Atiqul said.

He said that DNCC is also working for the upgradation of the living standards of slum dwellers.

During the programme, Mayor Atiqul Islam distributed masks and hand sanitizers among the slum dwellers who came to receive the vaccine at Ershadnagar Playground of Korail slum.
