Speakers at a programme on Monday said violence against sex workers must end as it is one of the burning issues in Bangladesh.
“Violence can take many forms. Sex workers face physical, sexual, economical, and emotional violence often. Nowadays sex workers are tortured in many ways,” said Niger Sultana, national coordinator of HIV/AIDS Research and Welfare Centre (HARC).
Morzina Begum, a HARC outreach worker, mentioned sex workers face many challenges, including violence, poverty, lack of social support, stigma and discrimination, being deprived of healthcare, education and justice.
Sathi Akter, an advocacy steering committee member, said over the last few months, sex workers were educated about their rights, human rights, legal literacy, capacity-building and collective action against all forms of violence.
