Students of Dhaka University (DU) planted a Krishnachura sapling on Thursday one day after a species of the same tree was cut down on the campus.

Students from different departments of the university gathered near the felled tree and planted a sapling next to it.

Later, they paraded around the campus with a branch of the felled tree wrapped in a white cloth and dispersed in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s residence.

The students also put forward a set of demands. They said the authorities must refrain from cutting down any other trees in the future and plant at least one hundred new saplings on the campus.

They also demanded that the wood of the chopped down tree should not be sold and it should only be used by the students of Fine Arts Faculty.

Earlier on Wednesday, the DU authorities logged an old Krishnachura tree which was the embodiment of beauty on the university campus.

The students are protesting on social media against cutting down the tree which is considered a symbol of beauty on the campus.

However, the university authorities on Wednesday said that the tree was felled because it became risky.
