The Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) recovered a huge amount of drugs, including foreign and local alcohol, from a house at Gulshan-1 in the capital on Thursday.

On the basis of intelligence information, a team of Dhaka Metro North unit of the DNC carried out a raid at a house in the evening.

Mehedi Hasan, assistant director of the DNC unit, told the Daily Sun that on the basis of intelligence information that illegal drugs were being sold in the residence, they raided the house and found huge local and foreign wine and other things.

“Mohammad Faisal, owner of Kamal Real Estate, has been running the illegal drug trade for a long time under the guise of real estate business,” he said. The drive was continuing till filling this report at 8:18pm.

Meanwhile, the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) has recovered 2.5 lakh Yaba tablets worth about Tk 7.5 crore from Habibchhara Ghat in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar district.

A team of Teknaf Specialised Zone under the DNC headquarters raided the area on Wednesday evening and recovered the pills from an engine-boat.  None of those, who brought the illegal drugs, could be arrested.

Md Sirajul Mostafa, assistant director of Teknaf Specialised Zone, disclosed the information at a press briefing at his office in Teknaf on Thursday.

A powerful syndicate was smuggling Yaba tablets to Cox’s Bazar from Myanmar using the Habibchhara Ghat, he said.

“We came to know about the syndicate. Two members of the gang are Mohammad Harun and Rohingya Kamal. The boat of Harun was ferrying the drugs,” he said.

On information, a team of the law enforcers raided the ghat area, but the men in boat fled the scene, he said.  “Afterwards, the DNC men searched the boat and found the Yaba pills. The boat was seized and we are trying to arrest the accused,” he added. A case was filed against eight members of the syndicate.

On the other hand, members of intelligence agencies of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 54 people on charges of selling and consuming drugs in the city during last 24 hours ending 6 am on Thursday.

Police seized 4,909 pieces of yaba, 193 grams of heroin and 7.410 kilograms of cannabis (ganja) from them, according to the statement.  Police filed 40 cases against the arrestees in this connection with police stations concerned under the Narcotics Control Act.
