Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Monday said the BNP carried out the August 21 grenade attack in 2004 through militant groups.

“The BNP carried out the grenade attack on August 21 through militant groups. The confessional statements on how the people of Jamaat and Harkat-ul-Jihad and other militant groups were involved in the attack and how their responsibilities were shared are still available on social media,” he said.

Hasan, also the Awami League joint general secretary, said this while addressing a reminiscence meeting on Ivy Rahman, who was killed in the August 21 grenade attack, at Jatiya Press Club in the capital.

The information minister said when Ziaur Rahman’s wife Khaleda Zia was in power, the attack was carried out with the grenades of army, conducted by Hawa Bhaban, under the direct patronage of the government.

He said the then state minister for home affairs Lutfuzzaman Babar supplied the grenades and a meeting was held at Hawa Bhaban to this end in the presence of Tarique Rahman, Babar and former deputy minister Abdus Salam.
