Moderate quake jolts country

A moderate earthquake of 5.2 magnitude was felt in the capital and some other parts of the country on Wednesday morning.

The epicentre of the earthquake was at Lakhipur in Meghalaya region of India, said Md Zahirul Islam, wireless supervisor of Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

The epicenter was about 242km North of BMD Seismic Centre of Dhaka, according to BMD.

However, as per United States Geological Survey (USGS) data, the epicentre of the earthquake – measured at 5.3 on the Richter scale – was 7km from Lakhipur in Meghalaya, India.

The tremor was also felt in several districts including Dinajpur, Rangpur, Kurigram, Kushtia, Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha, Sherpur, Rajshahi, and Naogaon.

No casualties or damage to properties have been reported so far.
