Chattogram: Former Superintendent of Police (SP) Babul Akter was sent to jail on Monday after completion of a five-day remand in a fresh case filed over killing of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu.

The court of Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Sarwar Jahan ordered to send him to jail after the investigating officer of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) produced him before it on Monday.

Assistant Commissioner (AC-Prosecution) Kazi Shahabuddin Ahmed of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) said Babul was taken to the court for making confessional statement under section 164 at around 10:30am.

But, the accused didn’t agree to make statement finally. Later, the court ordered to send him to jail, said the AC.

Earlier on May 12, PBI arrested Babul in the murder case filed by the victim’s father Mosharraf Hossain following the final report submitted in the case filed earlier by Babul.

Later, he was put on a five-day remand on the same day and quizzed in the custody of PBI till Sunday.

Babul avoided the important issues in connection with the murder and also provided some wrong information to misguide the investigators in the remand, said the investigators.

According to the case statement, miscreants chopped and shot Mitu to death while she was escorting her son to his school bus at GEC intersection, near her residence at OR Nizam Road, at around 6:30am on June 5 in 2016.

Her husband Babul, who had been playing significant role in combating militancy and terrorism in Chattogram,

was promoted to the rank of SP and transferred to Police Headquarters few days before occurrence of the incident.

Police primarily suspected that militants aggrieved with Babul for his brave role in fighting against them might have been involved in the killing.

But, after quizzing Babul on June 24 of the same year, police started saying that they could not unearth the motive behind the killing and trace the suspected mastermind Kamrul Islam Sikder Musa, who was a close informant of Babul.

Babul was also released from his service in response to his ‘resignation plea’ later.

On the other hand, the victim’s father Mosharraf was alleging that Babul was the mastermind of the killing.

He (Babul) carried out the killing engaging some criminals following his extramarital affairs with an Indian woman identified as Gaitree Amar Sing, an official of an international non-government organisation working at Cox’s Bazar.

PIB got the order for investigating the case in January last year and gave the breakthrough on Tuesday last arresting the plaintiff as prime accused.
