Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam on Sunday said solid waste and sewage may cause water-logging in the surrounding areas of Hatirjheel as these hinder water from passing through Special Sewage Diversion Structure (SSDS) and ending up in Hatirjheel.

He urged the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) and the Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) to take necessary steps to clean the sewer lines before the upcoming monsoon.

He made the remarks while speaking at a programme at Hatirjheel Lake in the capital.

The mayor said that storm water, household water and solid as well as human waste of Moghbazar, Niketon, Tejgaon, Nakhalpara, Karwanbazar, Dhanmondi, Green Road and Kathalbagan passed through SSDS having an 1830-mm diameter.

“The City Corporation is constructing storm water drainage system spending Tk 40 crore to solve water-logging problems of these areas, but the sewer lines surrounding the areas is full of faecal sludge up to 70 percent which has blocked SSDS of Hatirjheel,” Atiqul said.
