Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam on Wednesday said they are planning to set up a parking yard at Tejgaon in the capital to free nearby roads from illegal occupation by trucks and to reduce traffic jam.
He said, “We know railway has a piece of land in Tejgaon area. We will write to the railway authorities to hand over 21 bigha land to the DNCC. If we get the land, we will build underground and upper side multistoried parking yard for trucks.”The mayor came up with the remarks after visiting Tejgaon Truck Stand in the capital.
He also said “Around 5,000 trucks ply the roads in the area daily while 2,000 trucks are parked on Tejgaon truck stand at night. When the compound is full of trucks, some trucks are parked outside it. For the last few years, the number of trucks has increased many times. We have to find out a permanent solution.”
Mentioning the grabbing of Tejgaon Satrasta by keeping trucks, he said, “The roads were freed of illegal grabbing of trucks after 40 years by late Mayor Annisul Huq but sometimes trucks and covered vans are parked there. We with assistance of police sometimes free the road but it goes under occupation again.”
“I asked RAJUK why we did not make plan inbound and outbound trucks of the city and the vehicles kept in front police stations. We have no plan to address the problem and to get Dhaka as a developed city we need plan,” said Mayor Atiq.
DNCC mayor Atiqul Islam also visited different roads under Bhasantek and Ibrahimpur areas in the capital with a view to widening road to reduce traffic jam.
