Indictment hearing on Khaleda’s Gatco graft case Jan 26

A Dhaka court on Tuesday fixed January 26 for holding a hearing on charge framing in Gatco graft case filed against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and 17 others.

Acting judge Nazrul Islam of the Dhaka Special Judge Court -3 set the date, allowing a time plea submitted by defence lawyers in the graft case.

Tuesday was set for holding hearing on charge framing in the case, but prime accused Khaleda Zia did not appear before the court on health ground.

On August 5, 2015, a bench of the High Court rejected two writ petitions of Khaleda, asking her to surrender before the trial court in the case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission under the Emergency Powers Rules (EPR). Khaleda had filed the petitions challenging the legality of the graft case lodged under the Emergency Power Act in September of 2007.

As per the HC order, on April 5, 2015, Khaleda appeared before the trial court and granted bail in the case.

On September 2, 2007, the ACC filed the Gatco graft case against Khaleda Zia and others accused on charges of causing loss of Tk 145.64 crore to the national exchequer, allegedly by awarding the contract of container handling at the Chittagong port and the Inland Container Depot of Dhaka to Gatco.
