A team of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) seized cobra venom worth Tk 90 million from Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur district on Wednesday night.

The team also arrested two suspected venom smugglers Mamun Talukder 51 and Mamun 33 in this connection.

They seized six specially designed jars stuffed with the venom.

On information, a team of police conducted a drive at Kaliakair in Gazipur and arrested Mamun Talukder, CID chief Sheikh Rezaul Haider told the reporters at a press briefing on Thursday. Later, as per his statement, they also arrested his associate Mamun.

As per their statement, later, the team also recovered the venom from their possession. The venom is in great demand in Indonesia and Malaysia, the officer said.

The venom smugglers have been using Bangladesh as a transit route for the illegal business, he said.

Recently, members of the RAB-13 confiscated the venom stored in six specially designed jars from Dinajpur town.

RAB officials suspect that the venom was smuggled into the country from India, and was intended to be sold in international market.
