54 new corona cases detected

The number of corona infection cases continues to rise in the country, with 54 new cases detected while three more deaths confirmed in the past 24 hours.

“Some 54 new coronavirus infected people have been detected in the last 24 hours raising the total number to 218 while the death of three more people with Covid-19 disease has been confirmed in last 24 hours raising the total number to 20,” said Prof Dr Meerjady Sabrina Flora, director of Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR).

The health official came up with the information while addressing an online health bulletin from the DGHS headquarters in Mohakhali of the capital on Wednesday to give latest information about coronavirus situation of Bangladesh.

She said no coronavirus infected patients have been tested negative in the past 24 hours as total 33 covid-19 patients were recovered from the disease till the date.

She said among the 54 newly infected patients, 33 are male and 21 women. Five are aged between 11 and 20, 15 are between 21 and 30, 10 are between 31 and 40, seven are between 41 and 50, seven are between 51 and 60 and 10 are above 60-year old.

Of them, 39 are from Dhaka city, one from adjacent area of Dhaka and 14 from outside Dhaka city, she added.

Addressing the press briefing, Prof Dr Sanya Tahmina Jhora, Additional Director General (Planning and Development) of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), said samples from 981 people have been tested in the past 24 hours to detect the coronavirus infected patients.

“563 samples have been collected from Dhaka city areas and 425 samples from different districts outside Dhaka in the last 24 hours,” she added.

Some 10,157 people are staying in home and institutional quarantines and some in isolation currently, the DGHS official added.

She said 111 suspected patients are now in isolation and 139 are in institutional quarantine.

Sanya Tahmina requested people to follow COVID-19 health rules strictly and advised them to stay at home, maintain social distancing, wear masks when going outside home and wash hands frequently with soap and water.

Bangladesh on March 8 confirmed first COVID-19 patient in the country and the first death from the disease was reported on March 10.

A 37-year-old Malaysia returnee died of coronavirus-like symptoms in Nasirnagar upazila of Brahmanbaria on Wednesday.

A youth named Md Miad, 23, son of Shahidullah, resident of Sadar upazila of Narayanganj district, died on Wednesday morning in isolation with symptoms of coronavirus at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

Another youth died from fever and cold-related problem in Kapasia of Gazipur early Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Selim, 27, son of Surujjaman, resident of Ulsapur village in Tok union under Kapazia upazila of Gazipur.
