A college student reportedly tried to commit suicide Monday morning, as the authority of the institution ‘insulted’ his mother for his failure in the examinations.

Shahriar Alam Akash, the second-year student of business studies, ‘jumped off’ the second floor of Banophool Adibashi Green Heart College in Mirpur-13 in the capital.

The fatally injured Akash was first taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital and later transferred to National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital.

The incident sparked off an angry protest by his classmates against the authority on the campus.

When the authority tried to stop the demonstrating students, they engaged in a brawl. The students vandalised widow glasses of the college buildings.

Saddam Hossain, sub-inspector of Kafrul Police Station, said police had heard that the college authority phoned the mother of Akash and reprimanded her for his failure in examinations.

Later, his mother told his son off over the issue, he said. Afterwards, the student came to the college and ‘tried to commit suicide jumping off the college building’, the officer added.

Sudip Kumar Mandal, acting principal of the college, told journalists that he would open an investigation into the incident. After investigation, necessary action will be taken, he said.

Mohammad Selimuzzaman, officer-in-charge of Kafrul Police Station, told the daily sun that police were looking into the incident.

Earlier in December 2018, Aritry Adhikary, a ninth-grader of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, committed suicide, as the college authority insulted her in front of her parents.

A case was filed against the authority on charges of instigating her to commit suicide.
