National unity based on the spirit of the Liberation War is a must for realization of dreams of Asad who was martyred during the mass upsurge in 1969, said Secretary General of Bangladesh NAP M Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan.

He made the remarks while speaking at a discussion in the capital on Sunday.  Mostafa said the supreme sacrifice of Asad had paved the way for fall of the then autocratic regime of Pakistan led by President Ayub Khan.

The mass upheaval in 1969 had quickened the movement for independence of Bangladesh, he said.

Paying tribute to Asad, the NAP leader said the martyrdom of Asad is a milestone of the history of the country’s independence.

With Dhaka city unit President of Bangladesh NAP Md Shahidunnabi Dablu in the chair, Secretary General of NDP Md Manjur Hossain Isa, NAP vice chairman Swapan Kumar Saha and organising secretary Md Kamal Bhuiyan spoke, among others.

Meanwhile, President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued messages marking the day.

In separate messages, they paid tributes to the memory of Shaheed Asad and prayed for salvation of his departed soul.
