Dhaka Premier League giants Mohammedan Sporting Club have set their eyes to bring back their lost glory as they have already signed some of the leading national cricketers for the upcoming edition of the tournament.

The second most successful club in Dhaka club cricket with nine DPL titles last won a title back in 2009-10 and since then they have been unsuccessful in securing another championship title for the last 12 years.

MSC had been a traditional force in the domestic circuit but failed to live up to their reputation in the last decade and in the process, their arch-rival Abahani Limited have turned out to be a superpower in the domestic circuit.

However, the traditional club, which finished sixth in the latest edition of the DPL, which was held in the T20 format in June this year, on Sunday signed Bangladesh T20 skipper Mahmudullah and veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim for the next edition of the tournament.

Mahmudullah represented Gazi Group Cricketers while Mushfiqur played for Mohammedan rivals’ Abahani Limited in the last edition of DPL.

Meanwhile, Mohammedan also roped in national batsman Soumya Sarkar and extended their contract with pacer Taskin Ahmed for the next edition of DPL, which is likely to be played in March next year.

Mohammedan officials also insisted that they are hopeful to retain star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan for the upcoming edition which will double their chances to clinch their first DPL title in this decade.

“We are hopeful of retaining Shakib,” AGM Sabbir, director of Mohammedan Sporting Club, told The Daily Sun on Monday.

“Look we are looking forward to bringing back our old glory. Our fans are quite frustrated with our result in the recent past and now we have an elected body determined to change the scenario,” he added.

It was learnt that the club has already signed off-spinner Mehidy Hasan and retained Abu Jayed, Shuvagata Hom and a couple of seasoned cricketers in the domestic circuit alongside youngsters like Parvez Hossain and pacer Hasan Mahmud.

“We have also signed some youngsters and seasoned domestic campaigners because some of our squad members are playing across formats while there are some who play in one or two formats,” said Sabbir.

“We are well aware that we might not have all of them for the whole season as they might be busy for national duty. So we focused on having a squad that can perform even if the national stars are not available due to their national duty,” he added.

South Africa are expected to host Bangladesh for two Tests and three ODIs from March 18 to April 9 and DPL is expected to take place at the same time.

Mohammedan possible squad for next DPL: Parvez Hossain, Abdul Majid, Rony Talukder, Mahmudullah, Soumya Sarkar, Mehidy Hasan, Suvagata Hom, Sohrawardy Shuvo, Nazmul Islam, Rubel Mia, Sagor, Abu Jayed, Hasan Mahmud, Taskin Ahmed, Yeasin Arafat, Shakil Hossain, Enamul, Salauddin Sakil, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Ariful Islam and Samsul Islam Epon.
