Have more children, all-male advert tells China’s women

A public relations crusade to persuade Chinese women to have more children has drawn widespread ridicule for featuring only men.

Weeks after Beijing relaxed its birth policy to allow all Chinese couples to have three children to address the nation’s falling birth rate and ageing population, the advertising campaign was launched on television.

It featured eight fathers who espoused the virtues of having children, including a school teacher and taxi driver who promised to share child-rearing chores with his wife.

In the advert, Cai Gang, a 40-year-old doctor, dismissed the age of older parents as an issue. “We’ll jog in the morning, eat nutritiously, and we will have a healthy baby,” he said.
