Minister of Environment and Forests M Shahab Uddin urged all to cooperate to protect the Saint Martin’s island.
“It is difficult to protect the environment and biodiversity of St. Martin’s Island without the cooperation of the people… Therefore, I seek sincere cooperation of all concerned in complying with the government’s restrictions in protecting this unique island of the country, ” he said.He was speaking as the chief guest at a views exchange programme on protecting the island at the St. Martin’s Marine Park Center, said a press release.
“The government was doing everything possible to protect St. Martin’s, the only coral island in the country…In order to create awareness among the people, various programmmes are being implemented including regular publication of public notice in newspapers,” he said.
Secretary of the ministry Ziaul Hasan, Director General, Department of Environment AKM Rafiq Ahmed, Executive Officer Parvez Chowdhury, Chairman of St. Martin’s Union Parishad Nur Ahmed, representatives of various law enforcement agencies, including Border Guard Bangladesh, Bangladesh Coast Guard, Bangladesh Police and Tourist Police were present.
The minister inspected various activities being implemented by the Department of Environment to protect the biodiversity of St. Martin’s Island.
He released turtle cubs on the island and planted a coconut sapling.
