The Anti-Terrorism Unit of police arrested a member of banned militant outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir at Jatrabari in the capital on Friday.
Arrestee Jahidul Islam Jahid, 37, who is a teacher of English medium school in the capital, had been spreading messages of the banned outfit for 15 years.Jahid had been involved with the organisation when he was a student of Mechanical Engineering Department at the BUET in 2005, said Md Mahiduzzaman, special superintendent of Anti-Terrorism Unit (legal and media) of police.
He was nabbed acting on a tip-off given by another Hizb ut-Tahrir member and IT specialist Riaz Uddin Sipai, who was arrested from Keraniganj recently, said the police officer.
Huge leaflets and posters with anti-government statements, a laptop, four mobile phone sets and huge jihadi books were recovered from his possession.
Jahid, who is wanted in a case with Keraniganj Model Police Station, is now the head of Dhaka east unit and chief of the media section of the banned outfit.
He was inspiring people of various professions to the activities of the outfit to establish an Islami Sharia based state.
Jahid taught in Uttara and Dhanmondi branches of Mastermind English Medium School in 2009 and Maple Leaf International School from 2014 to 2015.He is now a teacher of Alfred English Medium School at Jatrabari.
After the ban of the organisation on August 15 in 2009, Jahid began to spread its messages secretly.
During primary interrogation, Jahid said he had been spreading messages of the organisation in the city for last 15 years.
He used to hold meetings with other members of the outfit secretly aiming to establish an Islami country. Another case is underway against him.
