CHATTOGRAM: Police arrested four members, including ringleader of a gang, with counterfeit notes of Tk 31,000 from the city’s Paschim Madarbari Shuvopur Bus Stand area on Friday.

The arrestees were identified as Md Jainal, 27, Md Sujan, 19, Md Sohel, 22, and Md Hamid Hossian Masud, 16.  Of them, Jainal is ringleader of the gang.

Inspector (Investigation) Muhammad Ruhul Amin of concerned Sadarghat police station said acting on a tip-off, they conducted a drive in the Paschim Madarbari Shuvopur Bus Stand area and arrested the four persons with the counterfeit notes.

Arrestee Jainal, who ran a cosmetic shop at Kathalia Bazar under Banshkhali upazila in the district, got introduced with one Masud around two years back, he said.

Jainal caught Masud red-handed with fake currency when he paid bills in exchange of buying products from his shop, Ruhul said.

He later developed a relationship with Masud instead of handing him over to the law enforcers, he said.

Later, the duo formed a gang taking some others including Sujan and Sohel and used to supply fake notes ahead of different festivals like Eid and Puja, the police officer said.

As the Eid Ul- Fitr draws nearer, the gang became active and started supplying the fake notes to the markets, he said adding that drives were going on to arrest other members of the gang.

A case was filed accusing the arrestees with the police station in this connection, Inspector Ruhul added.
