Call for upholding dignity of mother tongue

CHATTOGRAM: ‘Amar Ekushey’ and ‘International Mother Language Day’ was observed with deep respect and solemnity in the port city like elsewhere of the country on Thursday.

Thousands of people from all walks of life started gathering at Chattogram central Shaheed Minar with flowers from the first hour of the day.

They paid profound respect to all the heroes who embraced martyrdom for mother language on February 21 in 1952.

Former Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain and Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor and city Awami League General Secretary AJM Nasir Uddin placed floral wreath at the Shaheed Minar after the state honour was shown to the martyrs amid tune of bugle at 12:01am.

They were followed by Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) Chairman Abdus Salam and Chattogram Jila Parishad Chairman MA Salam.

Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Md Abdul Mannan, Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP)Commissioner Md Mahabubor Rahman, Chattogram district Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md Elius Hossain, district Superintendent of Police (SP) Noor-E-Alam Mina and leaders of Muktijoddha Sangsad also placed floral wreath to pay tribute to the martyrs.

Floral wreaths were also placed on behalf of Tourist police, Industrial police, Police Bureau of Investigation (PIB), Department of Narcotics Control (DNC), Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), Chattogram Union of Journalists (CUJ), Chattogram Press Club, Chattogram Television Journalist Association, Chattogram District Bar Association, Railway Police, Ansar-VDP, Fire Service and Chattogram Education Board.

Leaders and activists of different political parties including ruling Awami League and BNP and their front organisations also placed floral wreaths at the Shaheed Minar to pay homage to the language heroes.

Besides, different educational institutions including Chittagong University (CU), Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU), Chittagong Independent University (CIU), Premier University (PU) and East Delta University (EDU) also observed the day with due respect and differing programmes.

Discussion meetings, drawing competition, recitation of poems and songs were also organised to mark the day in the city.
