The government has lifted restrictions on all quarries in Sylhet and other parts of the country after seven years.
This decision is in response to a long-standing demand from workers and business owners who have suffered significantly from the closures. A circular signed by Sabrina Afrin Mustafa, senior assistant secretary of the Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources, confirmed this on 13 January.
Quarry operations have been halted since 2018, and on February 18, 2020, the government issued a notification to stop the leasing of all quarries. As a result, businesses that depend on quarrying faced considerable financial losses due to the prolonged closures, and many workers lost their jobs.
