Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) claimed that the lone son brutally killed renowned freedom fighter Abdul Halim only to seize all his assets depriving his sisters.

HM Masud, 42, with the help of an auto driver, Mohammad Rubel, 27, suffocated Halim to death at his residence at Dharmaganj Bazar in Fatullah of Narayanganj on January 31.

After the murder, Masud checked the blood presser of his father with a digital device to be sure whether he died, said Mohammad Monirul Islam, superintendent of police of the PBI Narayanganj unit, at a press briefing at PBI Headquarters in the capital on Sunday.

A case was filed against unknown people at Fatullah Police Station on February 1. The officer said that they first suspected Rubel, who was on familiar terms with the family of the freedom fighter and often came to their residence, as he was away from the area two days after the murder.

On February 11, the PBI arrested Rubel in his sister’s house at Jatrabari in the city. Later, he made a confession before a Narayanganj court that day. Rubel said that Masud hired him to kill his father in exchange for 500,000 taka.          On the night of incident around 10:00 pm, he went to the house of the freedom fighter after being called by Masud.

At about 11:00 pm, the duo entered the room of Abdul Halim. Masud first grasped the hands and legs of his sleeping father while Rubel suffocated him to death.

After the killing, Masud paid Rubel 500,000 taka. The DVR of the house’s CCTV cameras was given to Rubel to throw outside. Later as part of the drama, Rubel tied Masud with rope.

The PBI SP said that they are now hunting for Masud.
