Bangladesh qualify for 2023 World Cup

Sri Lanka’s defeat to Afghanistan during the opening match of the ongoing three-match ODI series Pallekele on Friday confirmed Bangladesh’s entry in the next year’s ICC World Cup in India.

Bangladesh are currently in the fifth position in the 13-team ICC ODI Super League with 120 points from 18 games and according to the ICC rules for the qualification of the tournament, the top eight teams will get a direct entry to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

Sri Lanka’s 60-run defeat confirmed that they won’t be able to surpass Bangladesh’s current points as the Island nation now have 62 points from 19 matches with only five matches to play in the Super League.

Bangladesh still have six matches (two three-match series against England and Ireland respectively) to play in the Super League and their loss in all the upcoming matches won’t cause them any problem for World Cup qualification.

Four other teams - Netherlands (25), Zimbabwe (45), Ireland (68) and West Indies (88) already lost their chance to leapfrog Bangladesh in the Super League points table.
