Shakib Al Hasan had the last laugh. The all-rounder managed to convince the Bangladesh Cricket Board that his engagement with controversial Betwinner News was nothing but a misguided one.

All the media outlets of Bangladesh were waiting outside the house of the BCB President Nazmul Hassan Papon on Saturday morning considering he was expected to have a meeting with Shakib to know what prompted him to ink the controversial deal with the betting surrogate company Betwinner News, which is reportedly a sister concern of betting site - Betwinner.

Shakib earlier backed out from the deal after the BCB gave him an ultimatum on August 11 that either he would scrap the deal with Betwinner News or they would cut all kinds of ties with him, putting his international career at risk.

The deal could also put him into legal trouble due to the fact as per the existing laws in Bangladesh, there are stringent prohibitions on establishments that facilitate gambling.

Allowing gambling businesses to function is in contravention to the law as well as the constitution.

Shakib came to Nazmul’s residence by a Toyota Axio car in the afternoon wearing a denim Punjabi with a coffee mug in his hand.

He certainly looked to be stressed if not anything else but whether it was true or not couldn’t be judged on his face value considering according to a man who accompanied him to Nazmul’s residence, he was in a chilling mood in the lift singing Hindi songs.

He also regretted that had he stayed there in the lift for some more time he could have done the branding of the coffee shop knowing that all the cameras would have clicked of him sipping the cup of coffee and it wouldn’t have taken long to get the branding of the coffee shop.

It only suggests that Shakib is completely aware of all his moves. A warm welcome at Nazmul’s residence only made the atmosphere light and after admitting that he was misguided, it did not take long for the BCB boss to bring him back close to his heart.

Nazmul took a complete u-turn from his stance during his last press conference at the Beximco office where he gave an ultimatum to the most celebrated sportsman in the country.

It is not the first time Shakib is seeking an apology from the board and according to members present in the meeting, it might not also be his last one.

However, the BCB cricket operation chairman Jalal Yunus wanted to sound optimistic though he reminded everyone that the board will decide their next course of action regarding breaching the contract as he did not inform the board about his sponsorship deal.

“We discussed at length (regarding the Betwinner deal) and Shakib understood that he made a mistake. He is a very important player for us but as we have decided earlier that we would give him captaincy we did that,” Jalal told reporters after the meeting.

“Shakib said in front of the president and in front of us that he felt it was a news portal and that was the reason he signed the deal. He felt he was misguided,” Jalal added.

Jalal also said that they will decide regarding his breaching the BCB contract by not informing them about his sponsorship deal in the next board meeting.

“We have logic behind appointing him and we are saying that he is our best cricketer,” he said.

“Basically, we should not compromise on such a thing but thinking about the team, we accepted it and we are hoping that he won’t make a similar mistake again,” he added.

Shakib left Nazmul’s residence before the announcement of his being the new T20 skipper.

He left the place while giving a flying kiss to the media after standing in front of the lift much like a ramp model and he did all these things with a smile on his face.
