Rights activists have demanded steps to stop the use of underground water and retain rainwater solve the shortage of fresh water in the coastal areas.

They made the call from a rally jointly organised by Prantojon and ActionAid Bangladesh at Assini Kumar Town Hall in Barishal on Saturday.

Speakers said that the coastal districts and communities are under the threat of climate change. The salinity of coastal rivers and other water sources is increasing and becoming undrinkable due to the extreme salinity.

As a result, the shortage of fresh water in the coastal districts is on the increase. On one hand surface water has become unworthy of drinking, on the other hand deep tube wells are not providing sufficient water due to a depletion of underground water levels.

The participants include Ronojit Datto, Mojibor Rahaman Khan, Shwkat Ali Badol, Md Rashed, Mosiur Rahaman Babu and Ebrahim Hamid Masum.

People in coastal areas are suffering from various diseases including diarrhea and cholera due to taking contaminated water from rivers and ponds. The health risks of pregnant women are increasing, including contractions, and uterine problems.
