PM directs energy ministry to clarify fuel price hike

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday directed the energy ministry to explain the reasons behind the recent fuel price hike to the people.

“The energy ministry and Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) have already clarified the reasons behind the price hike to the people. The ministry and BPC have been directed to brief over the issue again. The authorities concerned have also explained the reasons to the Cabinet during Thursday’s meeting in the presence of the premier,” Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam told media after the meeting.

The Prime Minister chaired the Cabinet meeting by joining it virtually from her official residence Ganabhaban. On August 5, the government raised the price of diesel by Tk 34 to Tk 114 per litre, octane by Tk 46 to Tk 135 and petrol by Tk 44 to Tk 130.

Soon after the rise, people have been sharply reacting to the decision and blaming the energy ministry and BPC.

Replying to a question whether the government would change its price-hike decision, Anwarul said, “If the government wants to backtrack on its price-hike decision, the ministry and BPC will make all things clear.”
