Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman GM Quader said holding a fair election is not possible under an authoritarian government.

“That’s why, constitution will have to be amended for a free and fair election,” he said.

The JP chief came up with the statements while speaking at a programme at the party’s Banani office in the capital on Monday. Former additional superintendent of police Sayed Akhtar Newaji joined the party by presenting a bouquet to GM Quader at the event.

The JP chairman said there is still time to bring the necessary amendment to the constitution to create an atmosphere congenial for fair elections.

He said a frightening situation now prevails in the country due to political rift between the two parties.

People have lost faith in elections, as they no longer wish to go to the polling station, he said, adding that public confidence in the elections must be restored.

The deputy leader of the opposition also alleged that the entire society is riddled with corruption, as nobody is accountable to the people of the country during the rule of Awami League.
