Police have arrested a ‘former activist’ of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir for his involvement in unscrewing nuts and bolts of the Padma Bridge.
A team of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested Mahadi Hasan, who hails from Munshiganj, from Ramganj upazila of Lakshmipur district on Wednesday night.
Md Asaduzzaman, additional commissioner (CTTC) of the DMP, disclosed this while briefing reporters at the DMP Media Centre in the capital on Thursday.
A case was filed against the arrestee with Padma Bridge North Police Station.
Earlier on Sunday afternoon, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police arrested one Bayezid Talha, 31, for removing nuts and bolts of the bridge from Shantinagar in the capital.
A case was filed against him with Padma Bridge South Police Station. Later, he was put on a seven-day remand.
About the arrest of Mahadi, the CTTC chief said on June 26, he and some of friends on motorcycles went to the bridge. Around 3:00pm, he loosened nuts and bolts of the bridge with a wrench at the Mawa end.
Mahadi studied at Tamirul Millat Madrasa in the capital. He passed Alim and Dakhil from there. Later, he got admitted to Kabi Nazrul Govt College, but could not complete his studies.
The police officer said during his student life, he was involved in the politics of Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, which was against the Liberation War of Bangladesh.
