Ex-BCL leader arrested for extortion

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested an ex-leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on charges of extortion and terrorism in the name of Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.

The arrestee is Delwar Hossain Sayedee, the ex-vice-president of Dhaka Metropolitan (South) unit of BCL.

Extortion, drug trade, and a breach of party discipline led to his removal from the position in 2019.

He was arrested with firearms, ammunition, and illegal drugs from the capital’s Sabujbagh area on Thursday morning.

Commander Khandaker Al Moin, director of the RAB's law and media wing, confirmed the matter.

The officer said that Delwar Hossain Sayedee was using the name of the Home Minister to carry out extortion and terrorism in the area.

Although Jubayer, general secretary of the Dhaka Metropolitan (South) unit of the Chattra League, was also arrested at that time, RAB did not agree to say anything about it.

On condition of anonymity, a RAB official said Zubair had been detained on charges of obstructing government work.
