Trader comes under attack in Keraniganj

A gang of extortionists has carried out an attack on a land trader and his associates at Keraniganj, on the outskirts of the capital.  

The miscreants also hacked them indiscriminately and snatched Tk 5,00,000 from them after failing to realise toll money. The injured were admitted to a hospital.    

Keraniganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Abu Salam Mia confirmed the information on Friday.

The incident took place at Shukur Ali’s house in Kanarchar area of Keraniganj on Thursday afternoon.

Shukkur Ali, 55, son of late Kalu Mia of Kanarchar area and Babul Mia, 45, son of Mohiuddin of the same area, were among eight to10 injured people.  Babul Mia is serving as carpenter in Bangladesh Army.

The accused were Mintu, 30, son of Anwar Ali of the same area, Asadul, Sentu, Alam, Malek, Alek and a few others. Mintu is accused of several crimes.

According to the victims, they have been running land business for a long time. Mintu Group demanded taka 5 to 10 lakh from each land purchase and sale.

They were also demanding extortion while selling a new land. Mintu and his team stopped Shukur Ali and Babul Miah when they were returning home with the money after selling the land.  

At that time Shukur Ali tried to run into the house. Mintu and his cohorts entered the house and hacked 8 to 10 people including Shukur Ali and snatched taka 5 lakh. Later, locals rescued Shukur Ali and Babul Mia in critical condition and admitted them to the hospital.

 A complaint was lodged at the police station, but no action was taken. Keraniganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Abu Salam Mia said the victim had lodged a complaint. An operation is underway to arrest the accused.
