Police detained Syeda Ratna, the coordinator of a protest campaign to save a playground in the capital’s Kalabagan area from turning into a police station, along with her son on Sunday.
Syeda Ratna, the coordinator of Tetultola Math Rokkha Andolan, and her son Mohammad Isha Abdullah were held outside the playground while they were protesting the construction of a boundary wall of Kalabagan Police Station and streaming it live on Facebook around 11:00am.
Sharif Mohammad Foruquzzaman, assistant commissioner of New Market zone, said the two were picked up for preventing the authorities from discharging duty.
On January 31, deputy commissioner’s office handed over the playground’s land to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) for constructing a police station.
However, residents refuse to give up hope to retain the playground. For months, residents have been protesting, demanding that it should be kept as it is.
