Three policemen of Jatrabari Police Station in the capital have been suspended for torturing some members of a family after they sought police help through 999.

The action was taken against sub-inspector Biswajit Sarkar, and constables Shawkat Ali and Nabanita Banasen.

Besides, an Ansar member who was with the policemen has been shunted off and it has been recommended that departmental action be taken against him.

Shah Iftekhar Ahmed, deputy commissioner of Wari Crime Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, claimed that the police team went to arrest Khayer Alam Molla at his residence at Bibirbagicha in Jatrabari on the night of April 8.

At that time, they misbehaved with him which is violation of the police rules, he said.

As their bad behaviour was primarily found to be true, they were suspended, Iftekhar said.

He said they formed a three-member probe committee to look into the matter. Additional Deputy Commissioner (Wari Zone) Kamrul Islam was made head of the probe panel.

Sources said Nurul Islam, a neighbour of Khayer Alam, had long been obstructing members of Khayer’s family and 15 other families from using a road lined to the main road.

He cut off the water supply of the house of Khayer Alam. Then, the victim phoned police through 999 seeking help.

Being informed, the policemen and the Ansar member went to the house but took side of Nurul Islam instead of helping the victim.           At one stage, the cops and the cohorts of Nurul Islam carried out torture on Khayer and other family members.

They forcibly took Khayer and others to Jatrabari Police Station where a case was filed against them.
