Reigning champions Bashundhara Kings moved to the top of the points table in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League after they clinched a narrow 1-0 margin win over Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Ltd at the Bashundhara Kings Arena on Monday.
Kings’ Brazilian captain Robson Robinho scored the decisive goal in the 83rd minute through a penalty to confirm his team’s victory and also completed their fifth successive win in the ongoing edition of the tournament.
With this win, the Kings also remained unbeaten at their home venue as they won all their three matches played at the Bashundhara Kings Arena while Sheikh Russel KC lost both their matches here. Kings extended their points tally to 15 from 5 wins and one defeat while Sheikh Russel remained with their previous credit of 5 points from one win, two draws and three defeats.
The injury-hit Kings made one change in their previous playing eleven – defender Yeasin Arafat came in the place of defender Tariq Kazi. However, the Kings put pressure on Sheikh Russel from the beginning of the first-half but their goalkeeper Ashraful Islam Rana smartly denied all their efforts.
Within a span of four minutes, Rana denied two close attempts from Kings' attackers-- midfielder Mohammed Ibrahim’s 7-minute header and midfielder Sohel Rana’s 11-minute left-footed close-range shot.
Rana also denied Eleta Kingsley’s left-footer from inside the danger zone in the 30th minute. They also got another close chance before ending the half-time but Eleta’s header shot the target off in the 45th minute.
In the second-half of the game, the Kings continued their domination but failed to break the deadlock until referee Alamgir Sarker awarded them with a penalty ten minutes before the final whistle.
Kings have been suffering a lot with several major injuries in the team since the season’s curtain-raiser Independence Cup. They accorded a farewell reception to the injured Bashundhara Kings’ Brazilian midfielder Jonathan da Silveira Fernandes after the Bangladesh Premier League football match against Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Ltd at the Bashundhara Kings Arena of Bashundhara Sports Complex on Monday. He will leave for Brazil today with his injury.
In the day’s other match, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Ltd played a 1-1 draw with Mohammedan Sporting Club Ltd at the Bir Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium in Munshiganj.
Gambian forward Solomon King Kanform opened an account for Sheikh Jamal in the 32nd minute of the game but Mohammedan’s Malian forward Souleymane Diabate netted the equaliser in the injury time (45+2minute).
After the draw, Sheikh Jamal earned a total of 12 points from three wins and three draws while Mohammedan earned 9 points from two wins, three draws and one defeat.
