Bangladesh national women’s cricket team failed to qualify for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 after losing to Sri Lanka by 22 runs in the virtual final of the qualifying event at Kinrara Academy Oval in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Monday.

Chasing a target of 137 runs to become the eighth and last team to enter into the prestigious tournament, Bangladesh could only make 114-5 in their stipulated overs and had to finish the qualifiers behind Sri Lanka.

Both the teams earlier won all their respective matches which made the last day contest a knockout one as only one team could have made it to the Commonwealth Games from the event.

Sri Lanka, who chose to bat first, earlier posted 136-6 after their skipper Chamari Athapaththu top scored with 48 runs off 28 balls while Nilakshi de Silva and Anushka Sanjeewani made 28 and 20 not out respectively. Nahida Akter took 2-34 for Bangladesh.

Bangladesh, in reply, were very much in the contest till the 16th over of their innings as they reached 96-3 and they required 41 runs off the last 24 balls to book their place in the main event.

The Tigresses lost opener Shamima Sultana (six) early in the chase before in-form Murshida Khatun (36 off 36) and Fargana Haque (33 off 39) steadied their ship by adding 50 runs for the second wicket.

The partnership was broken by Athapaththu who trapped Shamima in front and despite having wickets in stock, Bangladesh could only make 18 runs from the last four overs and eventually fell short of the target by a decent margin.

Athapaththu stole the limelight with the ball also as she took two more wickets later in the innings to finish with 3-17 and was adjudged player of the match as well as player of the series.
