Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh on Wednesday said that they would start re-excavating the old Buriganga channel in February next year in order to revive the river.

He made the comment while talking to journalists after visiting the old channel in Kamrangirchar area in the capital.

Taposh said, “We will build a central district zone in Kamrangirchar. So, we need a smooth communication network with central Dhaka and for that, we need to build two bridges. We have come to visit Kamrangirchar with our expert team to select the sites.”

“We have freed a part of the old channel from illegal occupation. We’ll start fresh drive to free the other part with the help of Dhaka District Administration next week,” he said.

Talking about DSCC Master Plan, he said, “We are working for developing important road networks in Dhaka. We are going to develop the Beribadh road on the Buriganga River into six lanes. The four lanes will be expressway and the remaining two will be service roads. The development work will be visible soon.”

Regarding the massive irregularities in the transport department of DSCC, Mayor Taposh said, “The department was overburdened with problems. We have investigated the issues and got a set of recommendations to revamp the department.”

Taposh also said that they identified the culprits in the department and would punish them.

“We have decided that we won’t allow any outsiders to drive our vehicles. We’ll appoint regular drivers,” he added.
