Rajarhat upazila declared free from child marriage

In the presence of thousands of people, Rajarhat has been primarily declared child marriage free upazila in Kurigram district.

The declaration event was held on Monday at the Helipad premises where State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Md Zakir Hossain gave this declaration as the chief guest through video conference.

Earlier, Bhurungamari upazila in Kurigram district was also declared child marriage free.

On Monday, the Upazila administration of Rajarhat organised this event jointly  with international development organisation Plan International Bangladesh as part of the ongoing project Building Better Future for Girls (BBFG) funded by Embassy of Sweden and implemented by RDRS Bangladesh. 

Member of Parliament of Kurigram 2, Ponir Uddin Ahmed, was present as special guest while Deputy Commissioner of Kurigram district Muhammad Rezaul Karim chaired the declaration ceremony.

Addressing the event as the chief guest, State Minister Md Zakir Hossain said with this announcement a milestone has been created in Rajarhat Upazila and the area started a new journey towards women empowerment.

“We have to work together to continue this development. Our girls are more caring than earlier, they are taking initiatives to stop child marriage and receiving award,” he added.

Muhammad Rezaul Karim, deputy commissioner of Kurigram, said, “We achieved indicators as per guideline of Government Innovation Unit (GIU) of Bangladesh government and received certificate from respective Chairman of Union Parishad related to declaration of child marriage free Union. Finally, today we got this declaration. We want to develop Rajarhat as a model upazila.”

Among other guests, Additional Superintendent of Police (Kurigram), District Education Officer, Vice-Chairman of Upazila Parishad of Rajarhat, Project Manager of BBFG project of Plan International Bangladesh Nazrul Islam Chowdhury and Head of Development Programme of RDRS Abdul Samad were present at the event. At the beginning of the event, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Rajarhat Upazila, Nure Tasnim, shared information on current context on child marriage of Rajarhat.

Later, a discussion session was held where the discussants shared the objective of the declaration, present situation of the upazila and future action plan.

The event aimed to create mass awareness on stopping child marriage as well as to advocate for the activation of different committees in upazila, union, and community levels to prevent child marriage, reduce the rate of child marriage and finally declare the Upazila as child marriage free.
