Nazrul Islam Mithu, Bangladesh correspondent of German news agency Deutsche Presse-Agentur, and Nurul Islam Hasib, special correspondent of the Bangladesh Post, have been elected president and general secretary of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) respectively.
The election to the DRU executive body was held on Tuesday amid festivity where some 1,454 voters, out of total 1,722, exercised their franchise.
Hasib received 500 votes while his nearest candidate Moshiur Rahman Khan got 336 votes.
Both the new DRU president and general secretary were former journalists of the Daily Sun. Daily Sun Staff Correspondent Solamain Salman has been elected a member of the 21-member executive committee, bagging 739 votes.
Besides, Osman Gani Babul has been elected vice-president while Shahnaj Sharmin joint general secretary of the organisation.
The other elected office bearers are SMA Kalam, finance secretary (678 votes); Abdullah Al Kafi, organising secretary (837 votes); Rafique Rafi, office secretary (715 votes); Taposhi Rabeya Ankhi, women affairs secretary (859 votes); Kamal Uddin Sumon, publicity and publication secretary (723 votes); Maksuda Lisa, sports secretary (723); Nadia Sharmin, cultural affairs secretary (973 votes); and Kamruzzaman Bablu, welfare secretary (780 votes).
The other executive committee members are Hasan Javed (821 votes), Mahmudul Hasan (739 votes), Sushantha Kumar Saha (701 votes), Md Al-Amin (686 votes) and SK Reza Parvez (665 votes).
Earlier, Aktheruzzaman was elected hospitality secretary and Kamal Mosharraf information technology and training secretary unopposed.
