Bangladesh beat Maldives after 18 years

Bangladesh defeated the Maldives by 2-1 goals in their second match of the ongoing Four Nations Invitational Tournament in Colombo on Saturday, ending their 18-year winless drought.

Captain Jamal Bhuiyan gave Bangladesh an early lead in the 12th minute of the match before Maldives’ midfielder Mohamed Umair equalised in the 32nd minute.     Defender Topu Barman sealed the fate of the match by converting a spot-kick in the 88th minute.

Bangladesh beat the Maldives in the tiebreaker during the final of the 2003 SAFF Championship at home.

In their previous meeting, Bangladesh conceded a 0-2 goals defeat against Maldives in their league stage match of the recently concluded SAFF Championship held in Male, Maldives last month.

Bangladesh were held for a 1-1 draw by Seychelles in the ongoing tournament opener on Wednesday.
