The Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) authorities have decided to rename an old female residential dormitory after Sabequn Nahar Sony, the first female student to fall victim to campus violence.

Sony, a second-year student of the Chemical Engineering Department of the university, was killed on the BUET campus during a gunfight between two factions of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student wing of the then ruling BNP, on June 8, 2002.

The decision was taken at the 526th meeting of the university’s syndicate on November 3, Dr Md Forkan Uddin, registrar of the university, said in a statement.

Besides, the BUET administration has also decided to name the newly-constructed female residential dormitory as Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall.

Registrar Dr Md Forkan Uddin said the naming of the dorm after Sabequn Nahar Sony has been finalised.

However, even if the BUET syndicate decides to name the new dormitory after Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, the approval of Bangabandhu Memorial Trust will have to be sought in this regard.

The female dorm was renamed after Sony, following a demand from the students.
