Awami League (AL) General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Tuesday bashed the party leaders of Noakhali for the failure to resist communal violence in their respective areas.

“No such incident has taken place in Chowmuhani in the last 12 years. There has been no attack on puja mandaps in Noakhali. Why and how the violence erupted this time? Why weren’t you alert to attacks on puja mandaps in Chowmuhani of Cumilla?” he said.

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said this while he virtually attended a programme marking distribution of relief items among the affected members of the Hindu community in Noakhali. AL relief and social welfare sub-committee organised the programme.

Following the alleged desecration of the holy Quran at a puja mandap in Cumilla, attacks were carried out on puja mandaps, temples, houses, and business establishments belonging to the Hindu community in different districts including Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni, Chattogram and Rangpur.

Quader said, “When the election draws nearer, we go to the Hindus, shed  crocodile tears and show compassion.

“But why couldn’t we stand by the Hindu community when they were in danger?”

The AL leader said that it is not right to wait for the administration to take action, as they have such a big organisation and so many activists.

“You have failed to discharge you duties. All of you will have to find a way to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

“So many mandaps were set on fire in this area. You played the role of spectators. You didn’t put up any resistance. It made me sad. I am ashamed of myself,” Quader said.
