Members of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) seized 12 kg of gold worth Tk8.44 crore from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in the capital on Monday.

A team of the CIID seized the gold on Sunday night, Nazma Jabin, assistant director of the CIID, disclosed the information on Monday.

The gold was being smuggled through an aircraft (flight No.BG-4148) of Biman Bangladesh Airlines from Dubai to Dhaka via Chattogram. On information, several teams of the CIID took position at HSIA and Shah Amanat International Airport, Chattogram, the officer said.

The aircraft landed at HSIA at 9:15pm. Soon the CIID members entered the aircraft and started searching for the gold. During the search, they found three packets and brought those to the counter of Dhaka Customs, said the assistant director.

Opening the packets, they found 104 gold bars weighing 12 kilograms. But none could be arrested in this regard, she said.

The gold bars were illegally brought to our country from Dubai aiming to smuggle to another country, she suspected.

A case is underway, she said.
