The Rio Olympics gold medalist gymnast Margarita Mamun has been named ‘Ambassador’ for the upcoming Bangabandhu 5th Central South Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championship, scheduled to be held from October 27-31 in Dhaka.

The 25-year-old retired gymnast arrived in Dhaka on Saturday, BGF president Sheikh Bashir Ahmed confirmed The Daily Sun on Saturday.

“We invited her as the ‘Ambassador’ for the Bangabandhu 5th Central South Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championship, I believe that her appearance will inspire our gymnasts,” Bashir said.

Margarita earned gold medal in the rhythmic gymnastics of the Rio Olympics. She was born in Moscow to a Bangladeshi father Abdullah Al Mamun and a Russian mother Anna, who was a former rhythmic gymnast.

She retired from competitive career in rhythmic gymnastics in 2017.

However, the international meet has been taking place after 10 years. The last edition of the tournament was held in 2011.

Ahead of the competition, the federation unveiled the logo of the tournament at a city hotel in the capital on Saturday.

A total of 170 gymnasts, judges and officials from Nepal, Sri Lanka, India, Uzbekistan and Pakistan will take part this year. Some 22 events – into three categories men’s senior, junior and women – will be held.
